so i just recently put a fresh head on my 96 2.3L ranger last month.
after buttoning the head and new timing belt etc up, it started right up, and seemed to idle a little high for a minute or two but then leveled off. i replaced all the gaskets and checked all the hoses. it ran pretty good for a couple of weeks, then my check engine light came on and it started to stutter and sputter sometimes, then idle really high at other times. i checked the code and it only comes up with a P0300 code, and when i clear it, the code just pops again almost instantly. when the head went on i put in new plugs and wires, and after this happened i pulled the pcv and cleaned it and the code instantly disappeared and ran pretty good. then a few days later the code came back with the same engine characteristics. so i went ahead and replaced the pcv all together, but this time nothing happened and it continues to run rough..

please help! any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated, i need to get this thing to smog by the end of june!

Without knowing what the P0300 code actually is, have you checked all vacum hoses? Just a thought.

the P0300 is a "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected"

whats next, replace the O2 sensors? ignition coils? EGR valve and PFE/DPFE sensor?

just so anyone else out there is wondering, i ended up replacing the O2 sensors and then the pfe/dpfe sensor which made the check engine light go out, but it still ran pretty rough. so then i actually replaced the TPS and cleaned out the throttle body really well and it immediately started running better and has totally smoothed out..

just fyi

...Thanks for the update...

...This is the first I had seen of this thread...:(
