96 rear axle swap...help!!!

my daughter's rear pinion went out and it looks like it chewed up the other gears pretty good. my neighbor has offered me a rear end out of his 93 ranger. does anyone know if these are the same or not? hers is a 96 explorer 4x4 v-6 auto with 355 gears 8.8. i haven't seen his yet. just was wondering if this would work. otherwise i called the local junk yard and they want 300.00 for a used rear end. never done this before. little overwhelmed.

the 96 uses disk brakes, a 31 spline axles, limited slip, with spring under the axle


Ranger will be 28 spline axles, spring over the axle, drum brakes, different shock mounts, sway bar, etc

Stick with an explorer rear end or rebuild the one you have got

AND a different width
