A friend of mine has a 2 Door Sport that feels like its hitting the rev limiter at 3100 rpms while driving. It has had the software reflashed and been to 3 different dealers and no luck. It does not throw a check engine light but no matter what while driving it will not go over 3100 rpms and has no power what so ever. Any ideas?

Plugged fuel filter? Bad fuel pump? It sounds like a fuel supply issue to me. A pressure gauge on the fuel rail could help diagnose it.

i'll give that a try. im starting to wonder if its not a tranny issue. We have replaced all kinds of sensors and nothing helps

GOD id love to find out what that is...when i was shopping for my X, i found a 99 Limited, absolutely beautiful inside and out. i was on the test drive, in a state of euphoria and excitement...when the same thing happened. Nobody i know oculd figure it out, not even the people at the ford dealer. i dont think it was trans though cause when it happened the first time i pulled over and put in 4wd to check it and it still did it..even in neutral. BEst of luck, and if you ever figue it out, pm me and let me know..thanks!

Plugged catalytic converter???

An idea anyway. You could check it's temperature with an infared thermometer. :)

throttle cable not tight enough, so even when you push the pedal all the way down it doesn't go wide open?

I have seen one do this intermittently. Anyone figured it out? :)

damn i have the same f'n problem anybody fix this?

kind of old thread.... hope you get a response, too bad the original poster didn't indicate a fix. If you are hitting your limit, at so low, I would think that it has to do with the "derived timing" which I think starts with the CPS which sends a "beat signal" that helps the computer generate various things for timing and rpms. Is the "reduced" rpms some multiple of the max (ie. half of 6Kplus)? Maybe missing some teeth on the drive shaft wheel.

Added:

I now see you have another thread which I think you actually point to most of your answer... maybe.... your trnasmission range sensor is telling your computer that its still in neutral or park keeping the lower rev limits in affect.
