97 5.0 Awd Shutters When Shifting To Od

So how does one know if it is Mercon or Mercon V in it? I have stock 4.0 with 4R55E with 115K miles. I know filter was changed at 60K but don't know what they used. Since I too have the shudder going from OD down, I suspect it is Mercon. All that being said, assume it is Mercon and I drop the pan, change filter. Can I just fill with Mercon V? I know that's only half the fluid (or less). Will it hurt or help?

Also, I don't have a trusted shop and prefer to do it myself to make sure it is done right.

I too have this issue and my truck has been sitting in the drive because of it. My speedometer jumps around too while the shudders are occuring. So my case my be a bit unique. I hope this will fix the problem. The previous owner had the fluid changed at Jiffy Bube and who knows what they put in the gear box.
