'97 5.0 awd

What tranny is behind the 5.0 in a '97 x with AWD. My freind that owns it beleives it to be the same as in the Lighting truck. I disagree and say it out of a GT Mustang at best. Anyone know for sure. Also how much horsepower will the transmission and
TC hold? THX

it is a 4R70W, and is not used in the Lighting. as far as how much hp, it all depends on how hard you run it and how you build it. its a pretty stout tranny, but it should be built up if the motor is gonna see over 350hp or so (just a guess).

The 4R70W is currently being used behind most of Ford's 4.6L engines. It is used in Crown Vic's, Town Cars, F150's with the 4.6L. It's a pretty well built transmission. I'd say it will hold more horsepower than your Explorer will make without some serious Mods.
