My '97 XL,Auto,4.0l,SOHC is stalling when coming to or at a stop. It only does it when you are in gear and you either apply or release the brake pedal. Sometimes it only spudders or misses and then maintains its idle, other times by slowly releasing or applying the brake it stalls completely. When it stalls I can put it in neutral or park and it will start up right away.(doesn't appear to be fuel related) I can make it stall just by sitting in my driveway, putting it in gear and pumping the brakes on and off. It definitely appears to be related to the brake system somehow. Can anyone help me to solve this problem??

Thx...Very Frustrated, RickR

When I read the title of your post I thought: IAC valve

More about it here

After reading your post I had a second thought: TCC (torque converter clutch). If it isn't releasing, then it would be similar to what happens when you forget to push the clutch on a manual trans when you come to a stop. You would probably get a CEL though if that were the problem.

Third thought: Something is shorted in the BOO (brake on/off) switch or circuit, so the voltage is getting pulled way down when you hit the brake. You could test for this by using a voltmeter and testing Vref (voltage applied to sensors) when you hit the brake.

Is there some way to check the torque converter clutch ? Also, I have removed and cleaned the IAC valve, as well as, checked the voltage & resistance - everything is OK. What are your thoughts on the Map & TPS sensors? Is it worthwhile going thru the test procedures in the Haynes Manual on these sensors?

Thx...Rick

Yes, i have a feeling its the tps sensor.
