97 explorer temperamental cd changer

I just bought a 97 explorer XLT v6-4.0 with a 6 CD changer that occasionally will decide to report "no cd" when I try to use it. usually it is while switching tracks, or cd's. It will sometimes work fine but then if I hit a bump or skip tracks too much it leaves me out in the cold. Does it just need to be cleaned or what?

Probably the magazine for your changer is damaged. Take a look at the magazine without any discs in it. The spacing between the slots should be even and parallel. If the edge of some slots is distorted, it can cause the CD to hang-up in the magazine - causing the machine to tell you "no cd" because it can't get it out of the slot.

If you have an extra magzine, try that, and see if the problem doesn't go away.
