So my wife calls me today, and tells me that her 97 Explorer (4.0L 4x4 auto 108k miles) is running "funny". First she told me that it idles high and rough when she starts it. Okay, maybe no big deal, it's cold. I can look into that more later.
Then she says that her transmission "slips" when it's cold, and will slip until the car is warmed up enough to get heat out of the vents. I guess it has been doing it a few days and she just tells me.
So the history of the car;
We bought it with 87k miles a couple years ago. The owner claimed to have spreadsheets of all the maintenance performed and everything was by the book. I never saw the said spreadsheets, but everything was in great condition. I have not changed the transmission fluid yet. Common sense tells me that it's probably due for a change. Okay, fine. Reading through the stickies, someone suggested not doing a "flush" on high mileages transmissions because you may dislodge debris or something.
How do you all feel about that? Is is safer to drop the pan a couple times and top it off, or to "flush" it at an oil change place?
Also, I haven't looked (she's at work), but does the pan have an rvt type gasket or rubber gasket?
Thanks for the advice.
The check engine light is on, fyi. When we pulled the codes a while ago it was only for an EGR issue. I replaced the EGR valve at the time but it didn't fix the code. I'll hookup the xcal2 when I get a chance and check for any new codes.
