Hello. I have just replaced my automatic tranny with one from a salvage yard. It only has 2nd gear and is throwing a p0707 code. If I pull it down to 1st it will take off in first and then go to second but not go past second. I tried to change the range switch from the original tranny to see if it was bad. But the switch on the one I removed has a 8 pin connector and the tranny that I installed is a 12 pin connector. Also upon further inspecting, the new tranny has one extra sensor on the top rear of the case. Did they put two different trannys in this year? and if so are they interchangeable?

Which motor do you have?

Both trannys are from a 97 4x4 with 4.0. The salvaged explorer was manufactured 1 month after mine.

4R55E vs 5R55E

I suspect that your original transmission was the 4 speed 4R55E and the replacement is the 5 speed 5R55E. They are very similar physically but as you said the 5R55E has an additional sensor and a 12 pin DTR connector. The 5R55E has the same gearing as the 4R55E but engages 1st gear and overdrive to fill the wide gap between the 4R55E 1st and 2nd. I remember reading a thread or two on the forum discussing utilizing a 5R55E with a PCM programmed for the 4R55E. You may want to try using the search function.

Thanks 200streetrod I'll give this a try. I also talked to the guy at the salvage yard and he said the same thing. Just use the wiring harness and range switch from the old tranny. I'm now wondering if I could use the PCM from the explorer that the 5 spd came from to get the full 5 spds from this tranny.
Thanks again for the links.

Tranny is working good. I used the wiring harness and range switch from the old tranny and everything is A OK. Thanks for the help! :)
