Hello, I have a '97 Limited the transmission seems to go into gear but the car rolls even in park and does not drive in any gear. I'm thinking it might be the transfer case. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

It is still installed I haven't started to tear it apart yet. I will probably start tear down tomorrow. I had trouble with the T-case last summer when the double seal on the input shaft went bad the transmissions fluid dumped into the t-case.

That sucks, yours is the first case of a AWD case going bad I've seen on here. What kind of miles are on it?

You can pickup a used one, one key question- what is your build date? Do you have a speed sensor in your AWD case?

Hmmm... I see where mountaineergreen was going with this....

edit: re-read the original post.... missed the rolling in park and NOT driving in any gear thing... something went kaflooey, either with the output of the trans or the input of the t-case. Start with the t-case and work your way forward IMHO.

Almost 194,000 miles, the build date is 8/06. It does have a speed sensor.

The only odd thing about it is when I was searching for the input double seal none of the normal autoparts stores had it I eventually went to the dealer and they gave me the wrong seal as well. I gave the numbers off of the t-case tag to the dealer and was told that it is a land rover t-case. Is this a common thing?

The manufactured date on the door is August 2006. Is it a direct swap to install a selectable t case? Im guessing you would have to change the drive shafts my front ds is the 6 bolt cup style.

Your 97 was manufactured in 2006?

You mean 1996?

It's a mostly bolt in deal- some modification required. Your biggest hurdle, whether you go selectable or AWD is a T case with a speed sensor gear. 410 got his to work- read his swap thread.

Oh yeah 1996 sorry about that. Ok I will go check it out thanks. I will get the t-case pulled hopefully tomorrow and post what I find... if anything.

Alright I have an update. It is the transfer case, the planetary teeth for the input shaft are half stripped off also the input shaft splines have started wearing too. So it looks like I will start looking for parts or a good low milage tcase. Thanks for everyones help.
