I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer that is unlocking by itself without the remote unlock button being pushed. Also when I put the key in the passenger side door, i cannot unlock the door (won't turn, driver side gets hung too) but it will sometimes activate the locks. Thinking I may be losing a ground but I don't know where all to look. I can check the ground connection myself just need to know that this actually sounds like the problem, where to look, or another solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I've not worked on cars alot so bare with me if I ask something stupid.

i have a 1997 too.when we put the key in the driver side all locks unlock..sometime the passenger will not turn i used ilttle lube inside the lock.and after it turns good now..we dont have the key alarm to lock all doors .we use the key pads to lock all doors.very easy to do...

Hey Guys. I have a 97 Exporer. I just had to replace the latch on my driver door. There is a spring inside that broke. It would not allow the door to unlock when the latch was in the closed position. I'm not to sure about the lock and unlocking by itself problem though. I know that there a little switch on the backside of the key mechanism that send a signal to the other doors and I believe the theft system.
