I know this question probably has been asked a bunch of times and my searches dont seem to help give me answers so here goes. I have a 97 x with 4.0L. It has 127,000 miles on it now and had 100,000 miles when i bought it and i had a filter change done then. It has 31s on it and i pull a small pop-up camper with it. I dont know if it has had regular maint on the tranny before i bought it. So what would be my best idea for maintenance on my tranny? would a flush be a good idea or just a filter change again? Let me know what your all ideas on this should be.

Thanks

A filter change doesn't get rid of all the old fluid like a flush. Some people have complained that their transmissions have died after flushes. There is a difference of opinion on this. If you have no current problems, then just drop the pan, and replace the filter. Sometimes disconnecting fittings, and reconnecting them could cause leaks. If you want to do a home made flush, disconnect the pressure line of the transmission, not the return line, and keep pouring new fluid in as the old fluid is pushed out. You will need an assistant to start, and stop the engine while you are doing this.

You might check out the FAQ in the sticky section at the top....might give you a jump start on your question. After reading that post what else we can help you with.

Ive heard that if you dont have any problems with your tranny now and do a flush then wait a few hundred miles and do a filter change it should collect most of the stuff that is washed out with new fluid. Ive heard most times when a tranny fails after a flush there was usually a problem before.

Also how about the change of fluid where you drain a quart and add a quart every so often until clean fluid is replaced?? Ive read the threads and researched but no one really can say from experience what a flush might really do. Ive heard so much from garages saying yes do it but no dont do it?? when i had the filter change done at 100,000 the fluid wasnt burnt but it was dirty. And like all fluids it loses its kick after awhile and needs to be replenished. So i guess the debate will go on just let me know from your experience or what you feel about this.

Thanks
