I just was told that i have a leak in my transfer case on my '97 explorer, and I am not sure what I should do. I was told by a coworker that i could just make sure to check it every now and again and fill if need be. A dealer told me that I need to replace two seals, which would run about $300.

The leak isn't producing any noticable spots on my garage floor. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks,
gerry

I would check the fliud level, and replace as necissary. Is the truck a manual or an auto? Depending on your mechanic skills you could pull the t-case off and replace the seals yourself. I know my seals were like 3$

Thanks for the info. My truck is an automatic. Unfortunately, I have never done any sort of work on my transmisson or related parts.

Can you visually inspect to see where its leaking from?

Yeah, thats what i am planning to do next, but haven't gotten a chance.

Go and buy a haynes or a chiltons manual. That will tell you how to check the fluid and whatnot. Like Ben said, find where it is leaking from first.
