Ok, I have had a brownish leak on the garage floor for a while now and just went under the truck to check it out. Looks to me (and after using the search feature for answers) that the rear seal has gone bad. (red arrow, i think this is where the leak is origionating) Other threads mention the driveshaft speed sensor (white arrow), but because of the way the oil has sprayed (green arrow), I do not think it is that. Has anyone changed this rear seal? How hard is it really? I have the haynes and chiltons and can follow directions well. I have never taken appart the drive shaft. Anyone think I am right or wrong in my assesment? I will check the level of the fluid now to see how low I am. Thanks in advance for any help.

Id just drain it, fill it 25% lucas oil stabilizer and 75% tranny fluid. Give it a couple days and see if it stops leaking. How long has it been doing that? Just keep it checked and it should be alright. My front diff did something similar and you would be amazed how messy 1 or 2 drops can really make.

I have this exact problem! Mine leaks quite a bit though... I will get a pic too.

is it me or does the case look cracked

It does look cracked in 2 places to the left and right of the white arrow.

The rear seal is pretty easy to replace and only about $9. Just remove the driveshaft and there is a large shaft nut. Don't loose the O ring under it. Flange shoule pull out easily though a gear puller is nice. Then pry out the seal and tap a new one in with a board over the surface. THE REAL PROBLEM IS!!!!!! This case is prone to wearing out the bearing mount. With the vehicle safely blocked, put the transmission in neutral. This will remove the pressure on the shaft. Now try lifting the shaft in the UP/DOWN direction. If there is play, the case is worn. The only real solution is the back housing replacement. A new seal can slow down the leak for a while. In any case, don't let the case run low on oil. It is transmission oil, but it does not come from the transmission. This is a wet clutch and it will cause grabbing.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just double checked under the truck, it is just oil and an optical illusion. No cracks. Thanks opera house. I will have to give it a try.
