Hi. I have a 1997 explorer xlt v-6 SOHC 252k on odometer. Whenver I get above 50 or 60 mphs and take my foot off the gas the engine makes a terrible noise and is having trouble downshifting. I am also unable to put the vehicle in reverse. It makes a loud noise and wont shift into reverse. The car has been in Georgia most of its life only a short amount of time in Colorado. No transmission work has been done in the past. I went to Aamco and they want $1700 to $2100 to rebuild the transmission. I contacted a ford dealership in Wheat Ridge, CO and they want $3200 for a new transmission. Many folks bash Aamco does anyone know of any good transmission places in Colorado?

I am not sure if there is one up where you are but down here in Parker there is one called MR. Transmission and i have never had them do anything for me i have heard good things about them so you might want to check them out

There is a location closer to Denver I will contact them.

i am not sure how expensive they are but they do do a good job from what i hear

Not sure which AAMCO you went to, but I know the guy that owns the Broomfield and Northglenn shops. He is also the transmission builder and is highly competent. I would definitely recommend.

Update: I went to the Parker, CO Mr. Transmission and the transfer case needs to be repaired. All told it will be $1700 + tax and I'll be back in action.
