98-01 Explorer 5.0L to 4.6L swap, is it possable?

The true answer here is that the AC box and header clearance is virtually non existant for the DOHC V8's. Regards,

Well sorry to inform you but they don't have push rods due to the fact that they are a over haed cam design. So all you did was reword exactly what I just said.

We build 60% Ford motors at the machine shop were I work part time. Sorry I worded it to were most people would understand. I'm willing to beat most people on this site would not have a clue that a over head cam motor doesn't use pushrods.

I didn't reword anything you said. You simply explained something in the wrong manner. In fact Ford engines are not considered modular based off of overhead design in and of itself. They are considered modular because of what I said before in my previous post. You are barking up the wrong tree here pal as I live modular motors, especially the 4.6 SOHC and DOHC engines.

OHC = lobes on cam open the valves

non OHC = pushrods ride on cam lobes and open the valves

Well, there are a few more parts involved in the operation of both the OHC and OHV Ford systems,.....AHEM rockers.......hydraulic(or flat tappet) rollers.... ;) :D Its cool man, I think everyone understood what you meant.

I wanted to do a 4.6L SOHC or DOHC & run a procharger or turbo. My shop specializes in Mod Motors so I have access to lots of R&D with the motors & power adders to make power, not to mention my tuning is 90% mod motors. I can make a very high horsepower mod motor with daily driveability & 25mph plus on a power added mod motor. Not to mention I can get a 2002-2004 sohc aluminum block explorer engine complete for around $2K & build up from there. Just was wondering about fitment as compared to motor mounts, transmission, hvac etc...thanks for everyones help.

The question you got to ask yourself is, "Does it mean that just because you can do it that you should do it?" I have the resources and easily the ability to drop a custom 5.4 with twin turbos into my 03 Explorer if I wanted to. However, I also realized that money is best used in areas that it will make the most positive impact on. Sometimes it is best to use what you got instead of reinventing the wheel. If you still want to do this then that is fine with me. I think it might turn out to be a cool project, but I speak from personal experience when I say that the bigger projects will rear their ugly heads usually more than just once. Things start out simple enough and then get complicated real quick even when great preplanning has occured. Good luck bro. :salute:

Ditto, I'm just becoming wise enough to begin to see when a project or idea is not feasible to begin. Take your time and research a long while before starting a huge task like that.

I originally wanted to buy a rolled 2002+ chassis to set my 98 body onto. It took a while to convince myself that the body wouldn't fit well, and the AC would be basically lost. Regards,

you know... if you have a 5.0 and you're going to pull it out you could build it to make more power... and if you build it right you can make a whole lot of power. i'm gonna almost guarentee you could build your 5.0 bullet proof with a nice supercharger and make it strong and realiable for less then you could swap in a decently built 4.6DOHC which are a pain in the butt to work on and it would take you alot less time
