I have a '98 4.0 with the check engine light on, the car will not shift into O/D, and the code said O/D band failed. Do I go to a Transmission shop or is there something I can look at first.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is great site.

Thanks Todd

Which light came on, the check engine or the OD light.
What was the alphanumeric code (s)? 2WD or 4x4?

It was the check engine light. The code was P1762.

P1762 Transmission SSC/SS3/SSD/SS4/OD band failure
No 2nd or 5th gear - Yes /No?

It has lost 5th gear. It shifts fine through all the gears up until O/D.

1. Band adjustment incorrect ?
2. Seal or piston, strut, lever, damaged - possible.

Shift solenoid SSC/SS3 must be energized for OD/5th gear to function. Did you check the band adjustment?

The front band holds the front brake and coast clutch drum to the case in 2nd and 5th gears. Because you have second gear
it could be a shift solenoid or valve body issue.

Thanks Wrench and Brooklyn, I will try the adjustment first. Where are the solenoids located? I could check the connection there. It is a 4X4 also.

The solenoids are located inside of the transmission. They are connected to the valve body. Read Glacier991's 5R55E valve body rebuild diary. It's a sticky thread on the top of the transmission section.
