Exactly how hard is it to replace timing chains, etc, in my 98 4.0 ? Am i better off giving up & walling away?

I wouldn't bother to do this job on a '98. Doing it yourself is a huge job and parts are expensive. Paying someone to do it will cost you more in just labor than the truck is worth. Cheaper to replace the engine. Cheaper, but not cheap. I wouldn't do either.

Engine must be removed to replace timing chains. As stated above very difficult and costly.

If you're the type that doesn't mind pulling an engine or transmission and you know your way around mechanical things then it's not too hard.

A big job, yes but not all that difficult.

The rear chain can be got to by taking the transmission out.

I have yet to see one that needs chains , if you can pull a motor throw in new guides and tensioners and press on , the rest of the motor will keep going , my old sohc had 260000 plus miles when I pulled it , it got guides and tensioners and is still alive in a 3rd gen 3 or 4 years later
