98 AWD Explorer Drive line

Hello, My Daughter just bought here first explorer, the transfer case was out of it, so I got a new one and put it in, but not knowing where to tune drive shafts due to every thing being apart when she bought it, I put it together how I thought it should be, but this must be wrong cause its got vibration and growl, can anyone tell me how to time the drive line, such as where the weights on the drive shafts (front shaft-back shaft) should be to each other? First thing to check is the tire wear. If there is any mismatch--even brand mis match you will have uneven rotational speed between wheels which will cause the transfer case to try to equalize tire speed, and noise.

Second, remove the front drive shaft ( yeah again- ) and carefully check the small rubber boot for tears. Believe it or not, most front drive line noise issues are related to the front drive shaft cv joint going south.


Several people have replaced the front drive shaft with another, and, in this case the weights are also placed wrong. I doubt this is the issue.

Well I took the front shaft out and drove it, it still has the same problem, so I pulled it back in shop and jacked rearend off the floor and ran it to 60 no noise or vibration, you think it could be diff. or cv joint out to front wheels and how does one check ?

Could be in the front diff, however, first check the basics. Wheel bearings(hubs) , and tire balance. Is there a chance a wheel is bent, or, a brake rotor s cracked?

with the weight off the front tires, grab the tire at the top and bottom, try to wiggle it up and down. If it moves at all the hub should be replaced.

if you can't seem to find any issues, then go deeper. It may well have a broken cv joint but this is less likely.
