So.. We have had this 98 explorer sport in our family for about 10 years. the last person to own it was my mom, we parked it about a year ago, put a battery in it and cranks right up. good..

the reason we quit driving it is because of the chirping. ive browsed throught the chirping thread. but mine isnt the cam sensor.. i dont think

it does have 400k miles. but when you crank it. it sequels extremely loud. if you run the air and lights it almost kills the vehicle. like the belt slips big time.

i would point at the alternator but it never fails to start.. so any suggestions?

Take the serpentine belt off & start it up & see if the noise is gone or not. If the noise is gone check all the accessories the belt drives. As far as the possible belt slipping check the belt tensioner to see if it is holding tension, it may be bad & need replacing. If it is not holding tension & the belt is slipping that could be the source of the squealing noise & killing the battery with a couple accessories on.

sorry. been working on it some everyday now. i absolutely hate top post so i converted it to side post. xD

here is some pics of how she sits right now.

i finially got it to crank yesterday after finishing the side post conversion. crank right up.
maybe some upgrades later on. the 99? + bumper. a grill. wheels. i really want a 5.0 ive been researching and i really miss my foxbody. and plus i got this explorer for free so.

now to finally figure out what causes this belt/squeal issue. get the wheels/tires back up.

Okay.. So working on it today and I slipped the belt off to see if it squeals without it and it doesn't.
But when taking the belt off I spun the alt pulley and you can hear the bearings.
Upon father notice I can rock the whole alternator bracket back and forth. It has play in it, I would assume it should have none?

i do believe i found my probolem. not 1 but 2 of the bracket bolts were broke inside the head. now to get these things out and get some new bolts.

on a good note. was supposed to go look at a truck. guy wants to trade my honda accord for it. he was interested in the explorer the way it sit until he found out it has no title. my mom lost it, so i gotta apply for another one
he has a 95 ranger 4cyl 5 speed

my local pull a part had a extremely nice 98 explorer sport. it had the grey front bumper and fender flares, with the sport step bars. had 218k miles. 4.0 5 speed. it was in extremely nice shot. no tears in the seats. thought about bying the trans for it.

So.. Got everything off.
Radiator, fan clutch, shroud, air intake. Drilled the a pilot hole. Tried a ease out and snapped it

So with that being said. Anyone have any suggestion on how to remove these bolts

I'm not sure how they broke or what caused the to break. The bottom on broke flush with the head. The middle broke with a little sticking out.

I tried a left handed drill bit but it was the same size as the bolt and was right at the threads.

I'm debating on removing the head but don't know if it's worth the trouble.

Good news. After weeks of it sitting there. My friend finically came and helped me (he works 6 12s)

But we drilled the bolt out. He robbed some hardest recoil inserts from work(he works in a die cast machine shop) we drilled a 16mm hole for the inserts. Went good. But...

The bottom left hole we drilled too far and it ran into the head bolt. Shouldn't cause that big of a deal

But the middle hole well it was a tad off center and made a hole half way through and the hole is in the actual head not a huge hole the insert covers most of it.

So we took jb welded the insert end to create a seal and jb welded the front.

So how bad is this messed up?

Looks good but worries me on that drill on first pic which is not centered.

I take all credit for it being off centered. My fault. He did good on drilling and tapping it.

When I was using the ease out and drilled the pilot hole I got it off center can't blame anyone but myself.

I would think it would be fine. The helicoil insert covered half of the hole and we used jb weld to seal the bottom of the helicoil. Then the front of the helicoil where it meets the head. Should be fine. If not I can't blame anyone but myself

I need to get a new serpentine belt. Before we parked it we fitted a a belt to it and it's 2" short. That was before we realized the bracket bolts were broke.

Then get a oil change, get antifreeze, and a full tune up. Need brakes and tires switched to the rims. The. Should be road ready

So... Good news.

Got it running been running for a few weeks. Put a little under 100 miles on it and then...

I was driving it and it wouldn't shift out. The cable is messed up anyways so I pulled over and made sure it was in drive and when I would put it in neutral it would rev to 25-3000 rpm. Drop it in drive and it was like dumping a clutch.

Got going and same thing wouldn't shift. Didn't drive it far just to a big parking lot put it in neutral cut it off and now it won't crank..

Any ideas?

I bought some starting fluid. It will crank on it. I had booster cables hooked to it and crank it cut it off and wouldn't do anything at all

Hooked the battery charger to it and charged it.
Took the intake off and away from the throttle body and sprayed starting fluid in it.

I tried to crank it and it back fired from the t/b.

When I went to look it was actually coming from the air intake. smoke was rolling for the intake tube that was away from the t/b.

I assume my Maf blew. Some how? Never heard it that but I guess it can happen

Would a bad Maf keep it from starting? Also when I tried to crank it again after charging it, nothing again.
