My brother has a 98 Explorer XLT 4WD with the 4.0L SOHC V6 in it. After some googling, I believe it has the 5R55E transmission in it. It has just over 100k miles on it. He's told me that it's slipping into 2nd, and the dealer quoted him roughly $2k to replace it. I haven't had anymore technical info. I suggested swapping it for a used transmission, the only problem is that there's no guarantee the used transmission won't develop similar problems. I don't really know much about transmissions, especially automatics, even though my daily driver has one. I'm not exactly a mechanic, my only mechanical claim to fame is that I swapped a blown RX-7 motor for a used one in running condition. I figure that swapping a transmission is simpler than swapping an engine, even with 4WD.
Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions to remedy the problem? Also, what other years carried the 5R55E? Swapping with a used tranny seems like a cheap and easy route, but it may not necessarily have a lasting effect if the used tranny wasn't in very good shape. We have about one week to fix it; I can spend up to 3 days actually doing wrench work. I have a wide range of sockets, but no torx.
Thanks in advance.
