I have a 98 mountaineer with the v6 that I got for free. The 4 wheel drive dosent work but you can hear somthing moving on the drivers side. Need to know if this is common and if there is any quick fixes.

You need to be way more descriptive. Under what conditions do you hear/not hear the noise? Does it vary with speed or RPM? Is it a growling, howling, crunching, pinging, knocking, etc? Can it be felt through the steering wheel or pedals? Does it go away during lane changes, acceleration, deceleration? Is it worse during any of those? Is it better or worse with a warm/cold engine? Does it get better or worse while going over bumps? Where does it seem to be coming from (front/rear)?

It's kinda like telling a doctor "I feel weird on the left side of my body."

It is a grinding like a dragging break caliper from behind the driver's front wheel. When the vehicle is moving at all.

Also which 4wd system do you have?

First step would be to get the front left side up on jacks and turn the wheel by hand...see what you can feel/hear, then pop the wheel off and do the same.

Its the full time awd with a 2 speed transfer case. I dont know jack about these vehicles. But I am wanting to make a trail rig out of it. I've already fixed the electrical problems. Now this is all that is stopping me. I'm thinking of just replacing the whole front end if I vant find out what it is. Its to cold do go oit and really look at it.
