well i just had the engine rebuilt, its a 98 4.0 v6 sohc, when i got it back all was fine, but theres was something with the transmission ive never had before, when taking off with a half way lead(going onto interstate and such) foot the trans would like slip out of gear and rpms would take hike, needless to say i take my foot off the gas and rpms go down then you feel/hear a clank and its back in gear, shifting is smooth, no problems taking off, anyway today i was headed out for school and my house is at the bottem of a slight hill so i know its hard on a cold engine but like most mornings im in a rush and had a lead foot, the trans did the slip out of gear thing and this time didnt clank back in, i pulled over, put in reverse to back out of a drive way, and now in reverse its like if you were to hold a clutch half way in, both in reverse and overdrive. dont get me wrong it will move but its like its slipping terrible, so i rolled back down to my drive way and put it in 1st gear, started to go and its like nothing was wrong, out it in second and it like nothing was wrong either, so this morning i drove out in second gear and not exceeding 45 mph due to the rpms being at 3500, whats wrong? it works in 1st and second but its like the clutch isnt releasing all the way for reverse and overdrive, there was never any smells of trans buring and no oil then got spit out, the oil doesnt smell burnt either. anyone have a clue?

edit: i just hit 100,000 this past weekend and now im at 100,239, the fuse for backup lights is always blowing and i just ended up taking it out because the car kept turning overdrive on and off while i was on the interstate and made a rough ride, so now that fuse isnt in there, theres some kind of automatic trans gismo thats also linked in with this fuse but it ran so much better without it in, and its been out basically since i got the car a year ago, i know its a short and i know the wire is under the stearing collum, i just havent had time to pull it back apart, any ideas? i drove it today also to school in second gear and it take off with no problem in first and second, i have enough reverse to back out of parking space but thats it, the overdrive is same as reverse, more like a role

If you have a 5 speed (5R55e) and the vehicle starts out normally in the "2" position then overdrive is engaging since "2" is produced by combining 1st gear with overdrive. For any given speed there should be a difference in the rpms between "1" and "2".

Does the OD off button on the shift lever have any affect? Does it light the notice on the instrument panel?

You might check the transmission range sensor connector to make sure it's on tight. It's located on the transmission near the shift lever.

the manual says its a 5r55e so i guess thats what i have, yea first and second work great, you can feel the shift from neutral to 2nd or 1st but from neutral or park to reverse or drive it isnt very solid. ive been riding around with it in second gear and theres no problems whatsoever. and the OD off has zero effect, at least from, stand still is doesnt make it shift in D or R, ive been outside trying to diagnose but havent gotten far, i check the range sensor to, i didnt know what it was i jsut un hooked it and spray some eletrical.contact cleaner in/on it and still no difference. and the OD OFF DOES light up on instrument panel when i press the button for it to go off.

yea i know the rpms will vary on the difference of gears, rpms higher for first and lower for second haha im not completely stupid.

Since the rpms are different in "1" and "2" that means mechanically and electrically the overdrive gear can engage. It's just not having an affect in "D" for some reason. I don't know which clutches, bands and solenoids are involved for 3rd, 4th and reverse but you may have lost one or more of them. When my Tahoe hydraulic transmission (4 speed) was starting to fail, it would not upshift from 2nd to 3rd but if I ran it up in 2nd and then let off the gas it would upshift to 4th skipping 3rd. Unfortunately, you may be looking at a rebuild. Do you know of a transmission shop you can trust to diagnose your problem?

i understand what your saying, let me give you a current run down of the problem in brief, and btw good job on gettin your explorer under 4k pounds, mine says 4700 on the door hahah and its not 4x4

shift into first gear: takes off with no slip just like its suppose to

shift into second gear: takes off from second with a little lag but thats acceptable because its taking off in second from dead stop, clutch releases fully and just how it used to once i get up speed

shift into D from dead stop: i can move some but its not enough for car to get up going

shift into R from dead stop: same as D, not enough to really backup, more like just roll out of parking space

shift into D from going 35-40 in second: at first theres a little slip, i let rpms go down, then it shifts to third and boom, it trucks along nicely, then if i gas it while in third i guess it goes into passing gear, and theres no slip at all, smooth normal shift into passing gear

while in D after switching to it from second and it running fine: i stop at a stop sign and im back to square one where i have to put it in first or second to take off, then i can procede to put it into drive and it go into another gear when i reach appropriate speed.

If it weren't for your Reverse symptoms I might suspect the vehicle speed sensors. Do you have any OBD-II codes set? Some possibilities:
P0720 - output speed sensor ckt fault
P0721 - output speed sensor performance

No codes at all
