1999 Limited 5.0 AWD
Hello Gentlemen,

Last night, I was stuffed under the front end of my new to me 1999 Explorer Limited 5.0 AWD, looking at the leaking pinion seal on the front differential. For giggles, I looked over the lower radiator hose, trying to gauge how difficult it was going to be to get the short hose out from the water pump and oil cooler adapter.

Too bad I couldn't find the short hose. On my 5.0, there is no oil cooler. The lower radiator hose is one piece, and the oil filter adapter is just that.

I thought all the 5.0 AWD's had the oil cooler. However, I saw a post where Turdle mentioned that later (2000-2001) V-8's didn't have the oil cooler. So, even though mine is a 99, maybe it was built with the later set up...?

Thinking about it, I am not really concerned at not having the oil cooler. From what I have read, it wasn't terribly effective. I am running Mobil 1 Synthetic, and will be keeping up on the cooling system of my Explorer. It will be fine.

Everyday, I learn something new...

And, I agree with you guys. Ye gods its tight in there!!! I had originally intended to remove the oil filter adapter to make it easier to change the hose between the water pump and oil cooler. I was going to replace the O-ring while I was in there.

Now, since I don't have the oil cooler, I am leaving the darned thing alone!

none of my trucks have the engine oil cooler. they all have the trans oil cooler and the power steering oil cooler.

Same here. Fin type P/S cooler, and plate type ATF cooler. I have an additional factory plate type ATF cooler to plumb in.

Thanks!
