'99 explorer 4.0 v6 4x4 sohc

1999 sohc 4.0 v6 4x4
My transmission just blew a hole in the top of it- weird i know. Any chance of hole being repaired( about 4cm/1cm) with an epoxy or such? Also I have another '99 that we use for odd parts, but it's only 2wd. Is there any way of the tranny being used from it? Isn't it the transfer case that has to do with the 4wd?

The question is why did the hole get blown into it. I wouldn't even try to repair it. Pull it out, and pull it apart to find out what happend.

Yea, man, first and foremost, find out what could have "blown" a hole through steel casing like that. Entertain us with some pictures too.

I would say the 2wd tranny will bolt right up. You'll have to unbolt the driveshaft flange from the 2wd tranny and bolt on the 4wd extension housing. It should be a direct bolt on. I can't think of any other incompatibilities.

Are you sure it would work? I mean, my brother-in-law is really good with vehicles and stuff, and he said the connections wouldn't match up. Is there any way I could look it up or something? I mean, right now, I have one person saying one thing, while another persons saying another, and I don't want to go through the work of dropping two transmisions for it to not work.. today was enough hell. :confused:
 






I'm not sure. Since you have both vehicles, this should be very easy to determine. Crawl under both with a camera and a ruler.

1) Count the number of bolts connecting the output flange to the 2wd transmission and the number of bolts connecting the 4x4 extension housing to the 4x4 tranny.

2) Examine the bolt pattern and measure the distances between each of the bolts.

3) Measure the length of the transmissions WITHOUT their "end pieces", from the edge of the bellhousing against the engine to the beginning of either the driveshaft flange end or 4x4 extrension housing.

The only other issue would be the output shaft, but I don't see an issue with swapping the 4x4 one into the 2wd if they are different. I have the full 5R55E rebuild manual at home, I'll take a look.

I referred to my ATSG manual (a must have item when working with the 5R55E) and according to the parts list, the only two parts that are different between the 4x2 and the 4x4 are the extension housings and the output shafts.

It's hard to tell how much is involved with removing the output shaft.
 






not an easy job, not an impossible job.

you have to take the complete internals out of the tranny just to change out the output shaft. like the earlier poster, I would want to know why the tranny popped a hole in the case.

do you know there is a hole for sure ? some of these trannys have a speed sensor that could have been broken off. they also have a vent on the top side...could have pressured some fluid out because of overheating, etc.

x2 -- the output shaft is not an easy thing to replace.
 






Ditto... It's not a direct bolt-in swap. You must swap output shafts too... unfortunately the output shaft is the last thing to come out of the trans when disassembling it, and the first thing to go in when reassembling it.

That's exactly what it looked like when I glanced at the ATSG manual, but I was in such disbelief, that's why I just said "It's hard to tell how much is involved with removing the output shaft." I didn't want to be the messenger that gets shot.

What an unnecessary PITA! The input shaft slides right in and out so easily that it will fall out when you don't even want it to.
 






hi- can't figure out how to make a new post so i'm using my old one!!lol... same truck( '99 explorer 4.0 sohc) i want to swap the engine with another 4.0 '99 explorer but it's a ohv . the wiring harness , etc. is different. Besides that the only difference is that one is 4wd and one is 2wd. Can this be done? can we swap?
