So I have the 4hi and 4 low lights blinking 6 times every 2 minutes. My mechanic says that the transfer case motor needs to be replaced. Option 1 is get an oe part through Ford at a cost of 385 or a Dorman for 75 or so. I know Dorman makes alot of parts, some of which are on my Expolorer, does anyone have any issues with the Dorman trf case motor? Anyone out in the LA area have a source for the OE part and Dorman, the mechanic doesn't shop online for parts. I was thinking of just ordering from Rockauto.com. Thoughts?

Thanks

How the F can I get rid of that annoying popup from infolinks that has Hilary on it?!

You or your mechanic can try rebuilding it: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-rebuild-4x4-shift-motor.123542/

You can also try a Motorcraft DISTRIBUTOR(not a dealer) : http://www.motorcraft.com/our-brands/wheretobuy

I'm not in LA, but you can put in your zip and find a non-dealer place that sells Ford parts. They actually sell to the dealers, and shops. Prices are similar to RA with shipping- YMMV (can't hurt to try!). I put in LA and found Warren Distributing, maybe some others. Some may not sell to DIYs(they don't list a phone, but you can stop by and ask), but they will to your mechanic. In NY there is United Auto Supply. These are no frills places with a desk and warehouse in the back, so they cater to Mechanic or Expert DIY. They don't sell air fresheners or give any advice.

Finally any major parts store should be able to get the Dorman one. If you are price conscious go with Rockauto.

Thanks 96.

Wow, that is one great writeup on how to reman your own motor! I wish I had the time and place to do it. Thanks again.

Thanks Tony.

Tony,
I can't tell what brand the motor is.

Thanks
