hi all, my x is making a clicking sound and i think that it might be coming from the CV end of the front driveshaft. when i grab the end going into the TC it has some play (maybe 1/4 inch) is that normal or is it not supposed to have any play?

THANKS!

Not normal, that is probably your issue. I believe they do make a repair for the joint now instead of replacing the whole shaft.

I bet that it what noise my truck is making as well. I have newerish wheel bearings and I know it is not the brakes as those are also new and good it is a bit of a slow sounding noise like its almost a rock or in the tire tread and occurs not that often.
Thanks for the idea. I'm off to throw it on the lift and change the oil and check that out. I am sick of the noise which is mostly noticed at slow speeds while "creeping".

Thanks for the quick reply, swetrid! I already did the front bearings, a pretty easy job. I quickly inspected the front CV joints, which looked to be in decent shape. I was able to move the front prop shaft at the TC when it was up on blocks, but when I tried o wiggle it on the ground it was pretty tight. Not sure if that still means it is bad as maybe it is just tighter when standing still. Any additional thoughts? I may pull it anyway to see if the sound goes away, and either repair or get a replacement from the local junkyard. From what I can tell, a new one is around $250 or so... kinda steep for a "dumb" part.

Mine is kind of a rapping/clicking sound... at slow speeds, at a frequency of about one wheel rotation. Does that sound like yours too? Will let you know what I uncover with mine.

Weird clicking or binding noise.

I was driving today about 55mph. and all of the sudden I heard a clicking noise. I slowed down and it seemed to get worse. It reminded me of when I had my cv axle go out on my 91 Blazer a few years ago. I had to go rent a socket from the parts store and I picked up a new cv axle thinking that was the problem. I pulled the old one out and checked it, it didn't have leaks or any broken rubber but I figured that was somehow the problem. I didn't know what else it could be and in a hurry to get it back on the road again I decided to just replace it anyways.
After I put it in and got it all put back together I put it in reverse and started to back out of my driveway and the noise was still there. Its like a tinging ticking noise almost like a cotter pin getting stuck and breaking loose over and over again maybe about 2 times per turn of the wheel. but not the same crunch sound that the bad cv axle made in my Blazer.
So after some more research I found out that there is the propeller joint on the front drive shaft that could be bad and also found a Dorman 932-201 kit online that's about $90 with free shipping, or $130 at the local auto store. Tomorrow I'm going to get back under there and remove the front drive shaft and see if that's my problem. I watched a clip on YouTube about installing the kit and it looks easy, but I don't have a tool to tighten the bands around the rubber boot.
Does anyone know where I could get that tool from? Maybe a parts store will loan one out?
Any feedback would be appreciated. If you think these symptoms sound familiar, let me know.
Whenever something goes wrong with my vehicles I always expect the worst. I sure hope its not something that costs more than the thing is worth.

Ask the parts stores if they have one. Advance Auto has a good loaner tool section, but sometimes the guy behind counter doesn't even know what they have on shelves :)
