I was looking at a 99 explorer sport today, its exactly what i want. except the left rear fender flare is dented. does anyone know how much that would cost? its hard trying to get this info from the salesmen.

by the way, how can i tell if its a 5 speed auto? and what the gear ratio on it is? and it has firestone wilderness a/t tires, would i just take those to some tire store and get new ones or what?

anything i should look out for before buying it?

thanks

i think they are all 5 speed now, if it says sohc under the hood then its 5 speed. if its a ohv then its 4 speed right? im not sure if they still made that puny 160 hp engine in 99. the axle ratio is on a code on the driver's side door panel

thats exactly what i have an i love it, like espn said make sure its an sohc which has great power and yes it a five speed. dont go with the ohv you wont be happy with it at all.

i disagree. ive had a 91 sport with the ohv and now i have a 98 sport with the sohc, and ive never had the problems with my ohv that i have with my sohc. not to mention the ohv got better gas mileage, but the sohc is a lot more powerful. granted ive had all my engine probs fixed, its just a pain in the a$$.

transistor, i hate to make you do all the dirty work, but if you do a search for 'tranny code' or something to that effect, youll see some in depth threads about where to find the sticker and how to decipher it. as far as the firestones go, you have 2 options:

1) take your truck to ford and theyll give you new tires, but theyll give you what they have, not what you want.

2) go buy new tires, whatever you want, and take the firestones to ford with a copy of your receipt, and theyll reimburse you up to $110 for a 15" and $130 for a 16" (and dont forget the spare too.)

theres lots of info on all that stuff on the boards - try the search function and poke around a bit.

good luck!

i own the ohv and my dad owns the sohc and you can totally notice the power when you need to pass or simply accelerating. mine will take a lot more energy to get up and move instead of the sohc. the sohc really is a nice engine and delivers plenty of hp with good mpg

The fender flare is about $120 installed from a local body shop. they come grey so its a perfect match for mine. I ripped mine petty bad one time out.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm trying to sell my car quick so I can buy that explorer. The dealership will only give me about 3/4 of what I want for it so hopefully I can sell it in the newspaper or something.

Thanks again
