I own a 99 Explorer AWD with 250,000 miles on it, and I’m moving from MN to FL (1600 miles) I was hoping to take a 6x8x3 pop up camper turned trailer for the drive down there, I have heard some negative things about towing long distance, I was wondering if it’s a good idea to take it? I’m worried about damage to my truck, and getting stranded, the truck Is in relatively good condition and was just tuned up. Again I’m looking to bring a small trailer down with me, do you think this will cause strain on my truck?

I don't know what a pop-up camper weighs...but, I'm sure it isn't over 1500 lbs and your 5.0 Explorer is certainly capable of pulling that. But, nobody can guarantee safe travel in a 20 yr old vehicle w/250K miles. Some things I would do is make sure the brakes have been inspected and are in good working order...fluids are changed...suspension parts are inspected for wear...all four tires are the same make/size/tread depth and have a class III frame hitch. If you consult your owner's manual, you'll also notice they say to disable Overdrive when pulling a trailer. Fortunately, most of the terrain between here and there is relatively flat with only gently rolling hills (no mountainous driving) that will be easier on your transmission...so, not sure if an exterior tranny cooler would be necessary. Make sure the tires and wheel brgs on the camper are maintained. If you drive your suv sensibly like it IS a high mileage, 20 yr old vehicle and don't try to keep up with all those other people who insist on driving 10 mph over the speed limit you should be ok.

I agree. Assuming you have the 5.0 (you said AWD which implies 5.0) there's plenty of towing capacity, and I think all of the 5.0 vehicles came with an external transmission cooler from the factory.

Depending on the trailer weight, I would recommend trailer brakes. Anything >3000 lbs is mandatory, even less than that is helpful and improves stopping distances significantly. Just make sure your truck is in otherwise good shape.
