99 Explorer XLS
Hi ... just bought it ... great vehicle .... not bad in the fuel mileage around town ... incredible highway mileage .... I'm impressed .... but I've got a couple of questions
1) the daytime running lights come on as soon as the vehicle is started ... thats fine ... and I assumed that they would go out when the park brake was engaged .... but they didn't .... now I would like to know if there is a way of shutting them off when the vehicle is running and parked.... now the reason I want to know is that my wife wants to go to the drive-in movies with me (at least I hope its with me) and it is still rather cool in the evenings ... so I would like to be able to start the vehicle to stay warm, without blanking out the movie screen with my lights. I don't want them to be out permanently ... I like the safety feature .. just when parked for the movie et cetera
2) are there any quirks / idiosyncrasies / bad habits / mechanical anomolies / et cetera with this line of vehicle I should be made aware of ... its the first one I've ever owned ... so best to be aware and be pro-active.
Thanks for the help
Randy

check the switch on the parking brake,it could be jammed and not opening when you push the brakes on.

Engaging the parking brake is supposed to turn off the DRL, but in 3 past Explorers I drove, that feature quickly stopped working. On my current ride, I disabled DRL altogether.

Other annoying issues that seem to plague 2nd Generation Explorers? Definitely the rear wiper (always something wrong with it), and front seatbelts that don't retract.

Thanks for the info and...

Thanks for the info .... I'll check the switch (Iassume its under the dash) ... and I'll keep an eye on the rear wiper for whatever.....as far as the seatbelts go ... I can see where that would be a problem ... the no retract item became a recall on 2 different Lincolns I've owned ... a 92 Continental and a 97 Town Car ... They changed the load spring and they changed the connector/release unit on the seat as well ... put in a longer version.
This vehicle did surprise me though. I bought it at Ottawa ... Filled it with gas ... drove to Montreal and stayed with the inlaws for (for a free meal/visit/and sleep) then drove to Saint John, New Brunswick ... a 14 hour trip (police everywhere ... must have been quota day .. so I kept the speed limit all the way, on cruise) .... in comparing the gas quantity purchased with the km travelled, we averaged 38.3 MPG (yes ... thats miles per gallon...Imperial Gallon that is). I thought I had made a calculation mistake, so I double checked it and then asked my wife (a scientist and math whiz) to look at it and it was correct.
The city mileage is about average for a vehicle of this type, but the highway mileage is .... wow!
and its comfortable ... I'm 6'8" tall and my wife is 5'10" ... easily accomodates both comfortably to drive .... and it rides like a car.
With the 4litre V6 it moves along nicely ... I've had pepier cars before ... but this is very acceptable in the get up and go department. and for a used vehicle ... it is in exceptional condition ... it had a stone crack in the windshield (whih the dealer changed before I took the car) and a couple of stone chips on the front and hood (which I have touched up myself and are now gone completely) ... and I have been offered more than I paid for it several times now .... so I guess the popularity level is right up there.

I have a 99 XLT and my DRL don't work at all could it be the relay switch?

is the XLS a 4x4? I'm looking at an advert on Kijiji and there's one for sale... I'm waiting for a response from the owner, but I'm looking for a cheap Ford 4x4 for my return to Canada in September. I'm gonna be there for 5 months, so it's gotta be reliable and 4x4....
