Hi, I am doing a ford 8.8 axle swap into a 97 jeep TJ. I found a great swap for it in a local salvage yard. I took some pictures but for got to take a picture of the identification tag inside the door frame. I was wondering if you can help me with more information about it, like was it a 4x4 , what engine , I think it was an Eddie Bouer edition. I do know the axle tag on the door tag said D2 and its confirmed a limited slip with 4.10 gear ratio. the reason I would like to know is when I go to the parts store for brake pads or for the few parts i will still use they ask me questions i just dont know. Im trying to figure out how to post pictures. ha.

Easiest way to post pictures it to take out a $20 Elite membership and then you can post directly from your device using the "Upload a File" button. Those are also saved on our servers. Otherwise you can use a 3rd party site like Photobucket to link/post pictures but many of those tend to disappear after a period of time.

thats the thing , I just dont have the vin #. I was just hoping by looking at the front hub or it being a Eddie Bouer edition, someone thats an expert with Explorers could take an educated guess

A 99 could have had 3 engines(V6 OHV,V6 SOHC,V8 OHV), AWD (V8), 4wd(V6) or 2wd(V8/V6), and anything for rear end likely absolutely won't matter. 2dr will have a shorter intermediate parking brake cable (obviously not an issue for you).
So you can say 4wd, 4dr, 4.0 SOHC and be safe.

Eddie Bauer seems to have 4.10 ratio, but there could be exceptions. Some have 16" wheels with that ratio (mine) some 15". Mine came stock with an open, I changed it to an LS.

trivia about rear ends that won't matter for your jeep:
V8s had mounting bosses for anti-rollup bars
All 4 drs have a boss for a 5th shock
2doors have none of the above.

thank you very much for the info. by looking at the picture of the front wheel hub , is there a way to tell if it was a 4 wheel drive? also on the back hatch i think that says Eddie Bouer , do you see the same thing?

Just google ford 8.8 axle codes. I'd guess a D2 is a 4:10 posi.

D2 is 4:10 LS, that's what I've got under my 01, you most likely got it from a 4WD SOHC

Other than the gear ratio and L/S or open, all the Ford Explorer 8.8's are the same. Even the '01-'02 Sport Trac's (which were drum brakes) are interchangeable. Avoid Ranger rear diffs as they're 29 spline.

Yes, in the front 4wd has a hub assembly just like most front wheel drive cars, RWD has an old school bearing in the rotor. The RWD rotor should have studs.

Also, my gears had the ratio clearly engraved on the pinion, but you would have to remove the carrier to see it. An LS would be very obvious. May be worth to rebuild your LS with the carbon fiber clutch kit, I'm so happy with my setup. It is around $`100 or so for the kit. I didn't even need 4wd in the snow.

Didn't Gen II SOHC 4x4's come with the 3.73LSD?

Mine has 4:10s, it was built in 10/2000 for the 2001 model year, and I've crawled under it, it is 4:10 gearing.

Ah. My '98 was built in 9/97 and had the 3.73. (wait one)...
...just looked at the build sheet. The 4x4 SOHC had available the 3.27, 3.55. 3.73, and the 4.10. Must have been an option? I had the Trailer Towing package - maybe that was it.

EDIT: Just loooked at a copy of my original Monroney . The 3.73 was an option and came as part of the Tow Package.

Aside from the tag on the diff, isn't there a stamp in the axle tube itself? I thought I remembered that but I could be wrong.

I don't know about the stamp on the tube, but mine leaks some oil about everywhere so I'm probably going to swap it, so I'll know more later. I think there was different levels of towing package, my V8 claimed it but didn't have the hitch, only a bumper ball and bent bumper to match, had 3:73 gearing, my 01 has a hitch and 4:10 gearing.
