99 Sport with slipping 5R55E

While looking for a 2000 4 door with a 5.0L to swap into my 2000 Sport I found an ad for a 1999 Sport with OHV V6 and a "slipping" 5R55E transmission. The vehicle is 2WD and has about 200,000 miles on the odometer. According to the owner the engine runs good and the interior and exterior are in good condition. I think I can purchase the vehicle for about $1,000. If the transmission problem is just due to a blown out valve body separator plate gasket I could repair it for less than $100. Then I could possibly sell it for $2,000 and put the profit toward my 2000 Sport upgrade. Unfortunately, the vehicle is about a 1.5 hour drive from my location and I don't know if it will make it back on its own. I have to call the owner and try to get a better description of the symptoms.

What should I ask to distinguish between major mechanical problems and valve body problems?

I dunno - the mileage is iffy if you are trying to flip it for a profit. even if it is a vb you are more than likely looking at an overhaul and trying to find a 2wd 5r55e is difficult if you just wanna swap it.. I think you could bargain them down from that price you would be in good but a G for 200K miles and a slipping trans is on the high side.. just my $.02

Forgot to add: I got my 99 Sport with known trans issues with 102K for $1300 with new tires etc..
