What all does it require to drop a 302 v8 mustang motor into a 99 sport 4.0l v6 2wd 5 speed.
I know the wiring will be entensive, and the pcm will have to be changed, but will the v6 tranny fit or will it take a v8 tranny, and if so would the stang tranny fit or only explorer v8? lastly will the stang motor drop in using the v8 exploer monunts?
Thanks ALOT for the help.

no the v-6 trans will not work with the v-8 and search... there's been quite a few threads discussing this, but a new model explorer would be closest to plug and play...

tried searching, couldn't find much info on the later model explorers. I figured since they were equiped in some trim levels with v8's that with those OEM mounts a v8 could go in. Now just to see if the v8 mustang tranny would fit or only the v8 explorer.

When you say you have a 5 speed, you mean a manual tranny, right?

If so, I don't know how big a pain in the ass it would be to swap in a Stang manual. But the motor would be pretty easy as you could just get the V8 Explorer motor mounts. A 302 is a 302.. so the mounts would all be the same.

But the easiest thing to do with find a complete V8 Explorer donor. Then just spend the weekend swapping stuff over.

Thanks for all in info. It not goign to be for towing, its going ot be a street trunk. Just coming up with the "parts" list right now. Transmission only ting still having to figure out. Seeing if T5 will work ok.

I was underneath mine last weekend doing a transmission service, and took a look at the mounts with a V-8 swap in mind. I'm certain the front mounting pads are there for a V-8 mount. The transmission crossmember might have to be changed to one out of a V-8 Explorer. There's more room under the Explorer than a Mustang, so it shold be a fairly easy swap.

One thing that might have to be modified is the driveshaft. One out of a V-8 Explorer would be too long (due to the longer wheelbase), so it would need shortening.

hmmm.. i could graduate from college, drop a 5.0 in my truck and make it a 2wd streeter/tow rig.. and pull a wrangler or a zuk behind it.. that would be cool :D

Section knows whats up, thats what we're planning to do to mine. I got a rolled over mountaineer for $1550 (split with a friend for $700) and he's taking the interior and I get the drivetrain. If you do it this way, you can probably get the swap done for about $1600 like I'm hoping...good luck!

I had a complete V8 explorer chassis that I bought originally to put in a 1997 2 Door Explorer Expedition. Well, long story short, I sold the 2-door, bought a 4-door V8 and later on a Ranger 4x4. At 52K miles, the 5-speed auto died in the Ranger - opportunity I was looking for - now I drive a Ranger V8.

The swap was completely straight forward and I had it driving in 3 weeks, even with delays for ordered parts. You 2-door will be just as easy as the Ranger.

You need everything V8 related. Motor mounts (both plates and isolators), radiator, hoses, A/C lines, throttle/cruise cables, batter cable, full explorer V8 with all accessories and wiring, all 4 CATs, explorer V8 trans or at least the trans wire harness, V8 air intake hose and air box (larger venturi in V8 box), etc. It is all direct bolt in. Not 100% sure, but you should be able to use your stock d-shaft with a 4R70W yoke. I used my stock Ranger shaft and swaped over the correct flange for the AWD t-case. Length was right on.

Also, be sure to get a 1999 or newer explorer engine, as your truck is returnless fuel system. Otherwise, you will need to add a return line on your truck. Also, you need to get the fuel pump assembly from the V8 explorer to use the in-tank regulator. The V6 you have runs at ~60psi. The V8 runs at ~42psi. Your truck will run rich and you can kill you CATS with 60PSI.

espnfreak, where did you get a roll over for ~$1500? Good deal!

Todd,
One of the members X-box was selling his down in Flordia. We originally found one for $1200 in NYC but it was in a little worse condition than this vehicle. We checked this one out, it was missing the GT 40 intake so we neede to put one of those on (luckily my partner has the parts) and then he fired it right up. Runs smooth only has 50,000 miles on it. Rather than chancing it, I buoght a new 4R70W off Ebay from Aerial Performance. We each paid $750 roughly and then $750 for shipping which I paid more for since he had supplied the intake for me. But so far I've sunk about $2100, and I will have my 4.0 Engine/Trans for sale, and a extra 4R70W with 50k for sale...so hopefully I can get it done for $1500 ish. Well see
