A/C Compressor question

Just replaced the thermostsat (it was stuck open). I was letting the engine run with the heat on after filling the coolant, and I noticed that the a/c compressor is kicking in and out, even though the controls are NOT set to either A/C or defrost. Is this normal?

Depending on where the temperature setting was (a little in the blue range) AND depending on which venting setting you had on, you also get air conditioning on as a result no just the "AC designed" ones which are obvious... these are outlined in the owners manual.
