A/C Grinding-New info in reply

I have a converted A/C on my 91 X. It had been working but not really getting very cool (70*-72* at the vent). So I put two 12 oz. cans of 134a in it (probably too much huh) took it out for a test drive and it started grinding. I know it's the comprossor because it stops when I turn the A/C off. What i don't know is:
1. Did I put two much 134a in?

2. If so, did I blow out the compressor?

3. Is it possibly just the clutch?

4. If so, can I replace just the clutch?

The A/C still works, it just sounds horrible. I don't want to spend $150 for a new compressor, have it sucked and dried, and put new 134a in if I don't have to. Have to do something though, my 2 month old rides in the car and it's getting hot. Thanks

P.S. Did a search, didn't find my specific problem.

Well, I had the wife turn on the A/C while I looked under the hood. The noise is still only on with the A/C engaged but it appears that the noise may be coming from the fan and there is what appears to be smoke. The only problem is that i can't tell where the smoke is from because of the fan and it sounds so bad that I don't want to leave it on. It almost sounds like the fan is hitting something, but a fairly extensive search reveals nothing obvious. Is it possible that when the compressor kicks on it puts more strain on the fan and causes the noise? I also think they need a really good "I am tired of my truck breaking down on me and I want to dump it in the river" icon.
