I think you need to try it.
For crying out side- please try it!

It's -45 outside right now buddy. So cold, it hurts. lol This weather is just getting worse. -_-'' *sigh* I need to move to Anchorage, the coldest they see is -20.

Is it so much to ask for feedback on this "mod"?

Man this thread is from 2001. Someone ask a question in 2001 and never got a answer. I will say that in 2008 you wont get a answer either

This is an old mustang trick, lots of ranger owners do it also, I don't have much info about the effects on explorers, but I know some people have done it.. people have talked about it on the site, there's some people saying there's a gain in hp, some people say there's none, some say it makes the intake louder and thats it, some say it makes the intake louder, and exhaust tone different... I just want to get the facts straight from Explorer owners, the ranger forums (dif site) they have a write up on it, but of course that applies to the v6..

hmm..

Ok fine. I did this mod on my 88 Mustang 5.0. It did make the intake sound a little better; better from a "more flow is getting to the engine" perspective, not better like "it sounds like a supercharger." I don't recall that it changed the exhaust note very much, of course I had American Thunder flows and they were loud as it was... don't know if I would have noticed 1-2 decibels more. And lastly, I didn't notice any significant power increase. The car felt like it breathed better, and I'm sure it did, but I didn't feel like there was any significant power addage. I mean, I put BBK shorty headers on it, which added 4-5 horsepower, and I could feel that. So you do the math.

Can you really feel a difference between -20 and -45? I figure once you hit -20 the rest is gravy - frozen gravy that is.

Oh yeah, definitely. I can stay outside for a little bit in a t-shirt and eat ice cream if I wanted in -20. You'd have to pay me like $100+ to do it at -45.

Hahaha, I get that a lot. Once you're used to it, it's not too bad. To a certain extent anyways.

LOL! Finally someone that also likes the cold. I LOVE the cold. Alaska is awesome! I want to move there when I move out of the house cause I'm 17. I used to live in Wyoming and a couple times in the winter it would hit -40 without windchill. But then we sold our house and moved sadly :thumbdwn::(

We spent 7 months down in NEW MEXICO!! f--k it was hot down there I couldnt take it, then when our A/C went out for a couple days I almost died (being 112 degrees) Anything over 65 is hot. But now we are living in Traverse City, Michigan. Still its hot up here. it never got into the teens in winter  what a rip off.

As to the air silencer question....took mine off and it made some difference. defiently more throatier sounds and really no feelable difference. Sounds good though exept for my pesky exhaust leak. Believe it or not, I used to have to down shift on a couple hill but since removing I got just enough power to where it wont downshift! lol. but if i get a passenger with me ( which will be a rare moment, I'll be sure to take a picture of that!) then it will downshift. Only downfall is the air filter gets dirty a little faster....

Im kinda clueless of what you guys are talking about as far as the silencer. Is it the HUGE hunk of garbage that hangs down in the intake just passed the airbox? It blocks like 1/2 the intake. I would love to remove that if that is what you are talking about.

Nothing wrong with bringing up old posts in my opinion.

Well atleast this will be one last post unanswered :)

And the part you are talking about is the silencer. Has about 2.25 inch opening then if you take it off opens it to about 4 inches. The mustang guys do it all the time...here is a link to it. The explorer ones look almost exactly like it. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/49.shtml

Really easy to remove, has plastic tabs on top and bottom that you have to puch pretty hard to pop it out.

I have done this airbox mod to a 98 ranger 2.5 and a 2001 explorer sport 4.0. Same filter and similar box used on both. The ranger has had a k/n filter for about 10 years and no ill effects on the MAF (granatelli). I clean the maf every 2 years before a smog check, never any CEL from oiling. Just done recently on the sport.

The conversion process is easy, just pull the air box and remove the little air inlet from the side it just pops right out, then you have a oval hole about 2x3 inches. Pull the plastic shield from behind the headlight and cut the hole in it to match the oval in the box, put the airbox and new filter in you are done.

Do not drill any other holes in the box... that is not going to bring in fresh air, only hot engine compartment air. Use the existing hole as it takes air from behind the headlight and it is plenty big with the part removed.

Water will not come into your airbox as it is the same location as before, only a larger opening.

Clean your MAF when you do this, get a can of MAF cleaner and clean it if it has been a while.

The sport is getting about one more MPG, easy to tell as it only gets about 17-20 MPG

You will hear more of the plenum sound when driving if you like it it sounds neat.
