Had a few questions - mechanical related on my 1994 Explorer Limited.

1. What is the top speed of the Explorer. Since the speedo only does 85 and it can be buried quite a bit - has anyone actually ever figured out what the top end speed of a stock 1st gen is?

2. What is the best fix for the 60 - 65MPH shake issue

3. New issue when 1st going in the AM or anytime the truck has sat for awhile. When 1st driving, the car will not shift out of 1st gear until 4500 to 5000 rpm. After that, it has no problems. I used the search but there seems to be some confusion as to what the actual issue might be under these circumstances

Thanks in advance

1. I've pushed my explorer to where the speedometer is pointing to the "Reverse" area. I'll never do it again. To scary.

2. Really isn't a solid fix, it's pretty expensive to completely fix it. I think it's caused by the vibrations by the driveshaft match that of the body in those speeds, so it increases. To remedy this, I just do about 70 if possible, seems to let off around there in my case. I'd imagine though that new shocks might help.

3. This could be a problem. Your tranny could be going bad (all A4LD's do at some point), or just a simple fix. I know my car had a problem going from reverse into drive, and it was a "servo" (i think) that needed to be replaced. I want to say there's one for each gear, so maybe the one that goes from first to second gear is getting hung up. If you take it to a transmission shop and explain it to them, they should be able to diagnose it for free

For item #2, can you measure the angle of the transfer case output shaft and the angle of the pinion shaft then post them up please.

That's right! I totally didn't realize you were dealing with a 4x4, I guess that does make a difference.9

the 2 shift servos are located right across from the cat...these servos get a lot of heat and there should be a heat shield in place to block excess heat (bad design flaw on fords part ) when i had my servos replaced the old ones were black in color the new are new metalic colored ( the out side part of the servo...looks like a big flat disk on the transmission ) i would imagine that the factory servos were a hardened plastic ( black colored) and the new revised part is now a metalic or actual metal ...i bet they did this to help combat excess heat from the exhaust system .

i'm sure if brooklynbay see's this post he can offer more detailed insight on the transmission problem .
