Quick question, I have a 92 XLT with 3.27 open gears and I plan on changing the gear oil in both ends (4x4) to a full synthetic. The shop manual calls for 75w 140. I was thinking Mobil 1 but that oil is about $16 a quart so it will cost like $80 for the oil. The Autozone that I went to also had Mobil 1 75w 90 and that was only $9 a quart. Obviously I would prefer the cheaper oil but I want to use the oil that's best for my application. If I have to buy the 75w 140 then so be it. I use the truck for towing every weekend during the summer but only short distances with a few long distance trips here and there and occasionally I will take the truck offroad on the beach. Also this truck is my DD and I do a lot of highway driving so gas mileage is important. So which weight oil would be best? Sorry for the long post.

Also, is Mobil 1 ATF OK for both the transmission and transfer case? Thanks a lot. -James

why cant you use something other than mobil1. its the (one of) most expensive oil out there

I would prefer Mobil 1 because I have heard so many good things about it. But it doesn't necessarily have to be Mobil 1 but I do want it to be a full synthetic. I am switching every fluid in the truck to a synthetic, mainly because I want the explorer to last as long as possible.

Thanks but I don't think I want to use the Walmart brand. I'm not saying it's bad because I have no experience nor have I heard anything about it but I would prefer the peace of mind of using a brand name oil. Also, I didn't know I could use a different viscosity in the front. I think I will use Mobil 1 75w 140 in the back to make sure the differential is protected from towing stresses but maybe I will put a cheaper oil 75w 90 in the front because I don't use 4x4 all the time. Is Mobil 1 ATF OK for the transfer case? I thought I read somewhere not to use synthetic in the transfer case. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Also I plan on greasing the caliper slide pins, do I need a special brake grease or is multi purpose grease OK? Thanks for everyone's help.

the walmart brand is super-tech. it has to meat the specifications as the others read the difference between the bottles. u would use synthetic ATF, thats what i did. yes it ok

Thanks for the info.

grease for the brake caliper slides

I buy the synthetic packs at autozone. They were 99 cents, now with the falling dollar, I think their at 1.19. That grease was a brake through in brake jobs. No pun intended!

I have been running synthetic in my tranfer case for a few years now and havent had any problems
