A few questions, your help would be appreciated!

Hi guys, I have some questions about 3rd generation Explorers/Mountaineers.

I hope this is in the correct forum, it's really confusing now where to ask general questions.

Anyway, I really am considering a 3rd gen EX/Mtnr to replace my '94 Sport 4x4, but have a few questions...


1) Do the V8s only come in AWD, or can you find one in 4x4?

2) What is the difference in MPG (city & hw) between the V6s and V8s (awd or 4x4)?

3) Does AWD use more gas since it's kind of always in use?

4) With the 3rd gens, is it true that they're really just big station wagons? Does the IRS really make it less 'off-roady'? I don't want to feel like a soccer mom driving one, I'd like to keep my balls intact.

5) Does anyone ahve any pictures of a 3rd gen with bigger tires on it? I've always only seen ones that appear to be stock, has anyone ever put bigger tires? Pics would be great! I understand it that theres no way to lift them, correct?

the IRS does make it less offroad friendly to modifications and larger tires.... a body lift is still possible though but will not improve articulation... the irs isnt that bad of a system, but is nothing compared to the solid axle the older explroers had... after 1998ish the true 4x4 with selectable 2hi, 4hi and low range went away

They have had soooooo many problems with rear differentials on the third gens that I personally would not buy one for any serious offroading. I just can't believe they would hold up to the torture. The rear diff cases are not steel, and they flex too much, which eventually causes the rear pinion shaft bearings to fail. Many people who only drive on pavement are having these units fail. Have to admit the ride is smoother with IRC.

Transmissions are a problem as well on the third gens. Many, many third gens are having tranny problems.

Do like the looks of them though.

Well I have an answer to #3. Yes, the AWD does eat into the gas mileage quite a bit, because it has to send power to all 4 wheels, instead of just the rear wheels. But I believe you can get a V8 with 4x4, but I may be mistaken, so don't hold me to it.
