I have a question about what is above the headliner because I'm planning on building an overhead console. I need to know where I can mount the console without putting a hole in the roof. If anyone can tell me or has any diagrams I would really appreiciate it. The console is to hold my CB.

I am in the process of installing a stock overhead console. I'll get some pictures up as soon as I get my hands on a digital camera.

I think all you'll need to do is put one where the stock console is with the stock mounting bracket. You'll see what I mean when I get the pictures up. (hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday)

Thanks I would really appreciate the pictures of where the factory console mounts. I could use it as a basis to build my console around.

delay

The software for the digital camera I was going to use has corrupted somehow and there is no backup. It might take a couple of more days for me to get the pictures, but I'll get them. Somehow...

Still trying to fix the camera. I guess. I'm still waiting to see some pictures so whenever you get some just post them.

look up quick....he did it on his and has good pics too

sorry

I've been gone for the past 4 days. I'm finally back though. I had to go ahead and put the bracket up in the headliner so I could get my visors put back on. I'll take a picture of how it looks in there and draw (attempt to anyways) what the bracket looks like. Sorry for the delay.

kind of a how to on mounting a console

Fototime was down or something, but I finally got my pictures uploaded.

the drawing of the bracket (don't laugh)

In the side view you can see the shape of the bracket.
The mounting lip pushes into a rectangular slot in the roof.
The red arrow points to where there is a hole in the bracket. The hole is there to push a clip holding the wire for the passenger side vanity mirror lights into. You have to pull it out of the hole in the roof, slide the bracket in behind it, and push the clip through the hole in the bracket.
The area with the green is where the bracket goes up so the wiring harness can fit there.
The purple arrow points to where the bracket bends back down towards the floor. It pushes the headliner down away from the roof so it touches the console.
The blue line shows where to stop cutting the headliner.

In the bottom view you can see where the holes and slots are and the area of headliner that needs to be cut out.
The long slots line up with two in the roof and the clips that hold the console up push into them.
I don't know what the big hole between them is for.
The holes with the purple lines pointing to them are for screws to go in to hold the bracket in place. Ones the same size as the ones that hold up the visors will work. (I used ones a little shorter, but same width and thread size.)
The holes towards the back are for the screws that hold up the console. Same size as the others.
The hole between those two is for a piece on the console to push into to line it up.
As you can see from the blue line, the hole in the headliner should be smaller than the mounting bracket.

Maybe if you put the two pictures together in your mind you can see what is looks like.

my instructions
When cutting the headliner, do not cut it enough for the bracket to fit up into the hole. Make a guess at where the rectangular slots in the roof are that match up with the slots in the bracket. (about 3-4" from the curve in the headliner, start in the center and cut out to them see picture below for a better idea) Cut out a square between the two. Then cut straight up to where the bend in the bracket for the wires will be. You will know when you find it because the roof will go up. There will be a wire there. Cut out about another 3" up and stop.
Next start out by pulling the clip with the wire out of the hole. (pliers are really handy here) If you haven't already done so, remover both visors being careful not to break the wires going into them for the vanity mirror lights. (pull the little ears on the clips and they pull apart very gently!) Remove the trim going up beside the windshield and over the door. (pull straight out over the door then up away from the windshield) There will be 2 little clips under them holding up the headliner. Pull them out with pliers. This will allow the headliner to hang down far enough to carefully slide the bracket up behind it from the windshield. Make sure it also goes between the wire and the roof. Line the slots and holes up, push the little lip into it's slot, and push the wire back into place. Put the two screws that hold the bracket still into place. Reinstall the two clips and and passenger side visor so the headliner will go back where it should be. Reinstall passenger side trim peice opposite of taking it out. Make sure the lips on the trim push back into the clips going up beside the door and pop the clip above the door back into place.
Finish by cutting straight up until you see the holes for the console screws. Cut just enough to get aroung them and stop. (see above picture)
Run your new wiring and harness over from the driver's side door and into it's place in the bracket. (a helper to stand outside the door and hold the wiring while you pull it straight up from the mirror under the headliner will make this an easy job)
Pull the clips off the console and push it into place to check for a good fit. If all is well, put the clips back on, hook the wiring harness together, and push the console into place. Install the two screws in the storage compartment, put the driver side visor back up, and you're done for the time being.

I hope the instructions weren't too complicated and helped out.

Very good write up and advice! I am going to use this when I finally get around to installing mine, hopefully next weekend.

Thanks!

Double posted.

You must have forgotten to comment on how great of a drawing that was... :-)

did you draw that? i hope it was the 6 yr old neighbors kid....j/k

HA...HA...HA... I took the whole part of 5 minutes to draw that with this stupid mouse.

John,
Your picture was very nice :). Onve I figured out what you were trying to show us, it was informative.

But, I still have one question. I've got everything I need to install the console but the two mounting screws from inside the sunglass holder. Do you remember how long those screws are and what size?? I'd like to get a couple of screws that I know will fit before I tear my headliner open. Thanks man.

I just used some screws in a jar in the garage. The thread size was the same as the ones that hold the bracket to the roof, which are also the same size that hold the visors to the roof. I used ones the same length as the ones holding the bracket, but you can use ones about 1/2" longer if you want.

Helpful hint: The way I determined how long the screws could be was to put toothpicks into the holes and mark how deep they went in with a marker.

BTW, anybody got a wiring diagram for an overhead console? That's all I'm lacking to get this thing finished.

There's a good wiring diagram on RangerPowersports. It's the one people here pointed me to when I was asking about the console installation. Lemme find the link......

Well, there is is, but it seems to be not working right now. Maybe try back later and see. It's got a wiring diagram for the console plug already on there. I printed it out so I'd have it when I started my install.

Stephen S

That site is in the process of moving to a new server. It has been for quite some time now. (I wonder what kind of problems they're running into..)
Do you happen to have the file so I can print it out also?

I'm not sure if I have it saved on my computer or not. I'm at work now, so I'll check for it when I get home tonight. If no one else can get it to you by this evening, I'll scan it and send it over to you. Cool??

I've emailed a bunch of people about it and no one has it, so I guess I'll wait for you to scan it.

Thanks.
