Off-road rescue

Quad riders praised following deadly rollover

By PETER SMITH, CALGARY SUN
Four Calgary quad riders are the heroes of a horrific off-road
pickup crash which killed one woman and left a man trapped for
five hours.

Police say the four men on their quad bikes worked for five hours
carrying out victims, and carrying emergency equipment into
difficult terrain near the McLean Creek off-road recreation area.

"We aren't heroes, we did what we had to do," said Barry
McCoubrey, who worked at the scene near Bragg Creek for five
hours with his buddies Kevin Ehret, Brian Gisi and Dan Derksen.

The deadly tragedy started at 7 p.m. Saturday when a Dodge
Ram Charger 4X4 with four people inside rolled off a ridge and
ended up upside down and crushed about 50 metres down an
inaccessible ravine.

A 22-year-old Calgary woman was thrown out and killed at the
scene, another woman was injured, and a man was trapped in the
crushed wreckage.

The fourth person, injured and covered in blood, went for help,
and walked for an hour before he bumped into McCoubrey,
Ehret, Gisi and Derksen on their quad bikes.

"He was covered in blood, cuts all over him, and while one of us
took him to the McLean Creek store to call 911, the other three
of us went to find the wreck," said McCoubrey.

"We came across the vehicle, upside down, with a man trapped
inside, so we held his hand and comforted him, and let him know
help was coming."

McCoubrey said with darkness came fears of bears, as there was
blood at the scene and food lying around. When rangers and
paramedics arrived, McCoubrey and the other quad bikers
carried equipment down the ravine to the scene.

Firefighters worked for hours trying to free the trapped man --
using the headlights of the quads to guide them.

"They put the quads in a semi-circle illuminating the scene," said
Redwood Meadows Emergency Services Capt. Rob Evans.

Later, Calgary police helicopter HAWC-1 circled the crash
scene, further illuminating the desperate battle to free the trapped
man.

During the operation to free the victim, a surgeon was flown in by
STARS when it was feared the man's leg may have to be
amputated on scene.

"This wasn't necessary when the victim was extricated," said
Evans.

The man was freed at 1:30 a.m. yesterday -- five-and-a-half
hours after the crash.

STARS flew him, and the other two patients to the Foothills
Hospital in three separate flights.

"We particularly want to recognize the efforts of civilian
responders Barry McCoubrey, Kevin Ehret, Brian Gisi and Dan
Derksen," said Cochrane RCMP Const. Fred Martens. "These
men supported emergency services personnel for over five hours
in difficult conditions," said Martens.

McCoubrey, Gisi and Ehret are friends who live on the same
street and Derksen is a friend who joins them for quad biking
expeditions.

The three crash survivors were recovering in hospital last night.
