I'll try to make this short. About a year and a half ago we bought our x for $1,000. Drove it home about 40 miles on freeway. Wife drove it home. All was well. Next day, she said it wouldn't shift out of first till about 3500 RPM. I get home and check fluid level. Full, but I've never smelled ATF as burnt as this. Did a redneck flush and filter. There was so much crap in tranny that I didn't even know there was a magnet in there. Alright. Rebuild time. Took it to a shop that's been around for 30-plus years. Hell. They did my Camaro tranny when I was in HS.

When we picked up tranny, he told us, VERY specifically, to ONLY use Dexron 3....both me and my friend looked at each other with that same look. Yep. According to the shop, the soft parts they put in were designed for Dexron 3, NOT Mercon. Cool. Whatever he says. Only issue we had after that was the slow 1-2 shift. CEL codes also show a TCC error...can't remember what, but I think it was TCC lockup failure. Drove the x down to his shop. He test drove it, and I went along. He said the 1-2 shift is just how these tranny shift. If I want it firmer, I could adjust the modulator. He also strongly suggested an after market cooler.

Now we've moved 250 miles away, over two mountain passes, and its a lot hotter here. Triple digits. While we were moving, my wife made numerous trips between old house and new, loaded to the gills, full tank of fuel. No OD except on flat or downhill. No problems. Stock cooler.

Here's the fun part. Winter here is sub-zero, summers triples. Tranny started puking fluid (NOT BURNT FLUID) from the vent hose from the tranny, but not until summer heat hit. Checked fluid level and it needed half a quart. Topped it off. Next time she drove it, same thing. This time a quart. As I added the quart, I could hear it BOILING from the vent tube. Oh ****aki. Shut her off, let her cool off. Topped it off and drove the 20 minutes downhill to our place. Puked again. Installed a 10,000 GVW oil cooler. No help. As long as she keeps it out of OD, it doesn't puke, but the x also won't pull a hill any faster than 45. I have a Samurai with a 4 and I can pull the same hill at 70. I'm THIS CLOSE to dropping the A4POS and putting in a stick.

Are there any ideas out there that I might try before venturing into the 5-spd swap? Governor in tail housing for 1-2 shift, also the VB mods (I would think the shop already did that)....another cooler....I REALLY hate autos, but she REALLY hates manuals. This is her rig.

Any help, well, helps.

Thanks in advance.

Bender

Oh. It does have a warranty, but by the time I pull it, make a trip to drop it off and another to pick it up, I'm gonna spend enough in gas to cover the parts for a swap, and the tranny will already be out.

Yes. Am I supposed to add it with engine off? Every other auto I've had, that's how I've done it....

I would recommend calling the shop that did the work on the transmission. If it is under warranty and they are as good as claimed the lead guy ought to have an inkling as to what really is going on.

I'll also make mention that I find it extremely interesting that in the 10 years I have been in the Explorer realm, I have not once heard of the claim about the soft parts being made for Dexron III vs Mercon fluid. Hell, by the time the Explorer you have (If it's the 1994 listed under your username) came out the need for a Mercon V specification had come about.

I would call the shop, explain the problem, see what they recommend. Could be simple. Also see about installing a fluid temperature gauge so you can see just how hot the fluid really is getting. I believe Tbars4 had a writeup somewhere that you could follow.

I've already called the shop on Tuesday, and he's never heard of these trans doing this....me either. Since he's never heard of it, he put a call in to some tech line back east to see if they've heard of it. He still ha sent heard back from them either.

As for tbars temp gauge, I was JUST reading that one!!!

I agree with the mercon vs dexron issue. Doesn't make ANY sense to me that any company out there making rebuild kits would purposely make a ford tranny rebuild kit, ad specify a non-ford lubricant.

My wife even asked me what's the worst that could happen if we just changed over to Mercon? All I have to go on it the shop, and he said "It would destroy the clutches and bands. They are designed for Dexron 3.". I double checked that I heard him right both when we picked it up, AND when I called.

My only real issue is it puking whenever its driven in OD..well...and the DTC code. I'm gonna go pull the code right now. Gimme like 5 min.

And I changed the x to a '93, for the record.

I've got three codes. Only one pertinent to this thread it the first one that comes up...629. Torque converter clutch circuit fault.

Adding fluid with the engine off will cause fluid to leak out of the vent hole. Inside the transmission there are a few seals in this area. They could cause fluid to leak out of the vent hole if they are bad. Are you sure that the fluid is leaking out of the vent hole, and not out of the weep hole in the bellhousing or from the front seal?

When we put the tranny in, I forgot the metal pipe part of the vent line, so I attached a section of rubber vacuum line to the case vent and ran it up behind and over the brake boooster. The only place that gets soaked with ATF is from the booster down the inner fender, and along the drivers frame rail. No, I didn't connect the new vent line to the vacuum tree.

Just how much will it expand when it gets hot? A full quart or more???

Brooklyn Bay;
I'm changing the fluid and filter in my '91 Ranger with A4LD and 3.0L.
So I should add the new fluid from the beginning with the engine running?
Thanks.:D

A4LD fluid change

I will do that. Is there any problem adding the new fluid with the truck still on the ramps?:salute:

Bottom of hash when cold, top when hot. That's where I keep it. Engine idling, in neutral. I have never overfilled it.

No. No pressure test. Gotta round up a gauge and rig it up. I'm gonna see if I can find a write up on that whole process.
