Hey guys I was wondering if anyone knew of any differences between an a4ld between model years. Back story:

I have a 90 bii that had a tranny that was going bad, found another a4ld off of craigslist out of a 93 explorer. Everything looked the same between the two except when I went to install it the bell housing was about an inch from being able to mount to the block so I pull it back out and measure the input shafts between the two and the input shaft from the 93 is an inch longer than the one I took out of the 90. I picked up another from a junkyard and it had the same length shaft as the transmission out of my 90 had.

Also the transmission out of the 93 I was going to use input shaft will not turn and the other two transmissions (the one that was bad, and the second newer one that did work out) both spin and turn freely.

Then another difference I noticed between the two different length input shafts is the shorter shaft that works has like a removable center shaft that goes into the main shaft that act as one shaft, but the other tranny with the longer input that didn't work out shaft looks the same was as the other but its inner shaft does not move in and out like the earlier tranny from the 90 bii

they are all for a 2wd truck, any help on this as I would like to resell this transmission and recoup what I spent on it since I can't use it and the guy I got it off of craigslist is giving me the stonewall and won't let me return it after guaranteeing it was working and would work in my truck.

anyone have any light to shed on this to help a man child out with figuring out what to do with this thing. I really hate throwing parts away and I don't want to take a transmission I only payed 200 bucks for to the tranny shop to see if it still works just to try to sell it to someone else. I cant sell it to someone on the assumption that it works, to someone and then it not work, but the frugal (or tightwad) side of me can't get rid of it cause then I feel like i got took for the first time on craigslist shaking my belief that craigslist is awesome

Do you have a front pump alignment tool? If so, then remove both bell housings, and examine the pumps. You will notice that the pumps have different size bolts since there were many production changes as you've already seen. They were in the Explorer until 94, and in the Aerostar until 95.

I do not have a pump alignment tool, and the other transmissions are either in the truck driving it down the road or the first one that was bad was turned in for a core when buying the third one. So all I have left is the second transmission that I am unsure if it is broken or not.

Should the input shaft be able to be turned by hand?

The removable inner shaft should be able to be turned, but not the larger outer shaft. Here's a picture of the outer shaft in the bell housing:
