Yes, I did it myself, and it even works. I'm giving myself a big pat on the back right now. I would like to thank everyone on this forum who helped, especially Brain. I know this isn't an Aerostar forum, but there doesn't seem to be any "Aerostar Enthusiasts" club out there. This site is the best thing going for information on the A4LD.
I ended up spending about $700. This isn't any kind of "bulletproof" rebuild or anything like that. Just a plain old stock rebuild. I don't know how long it'll last, but its running right now! The overdrive section was all messed up and the forward clutch was toasted. Pretty common problems on these things, from what I've gathered. So if anyone's interested in doing it themselves, here's one more example that it can be done.

good job dude, any one would be proud of themselves for rebuilding a trans mission

Not enough can be said! I think the number of people that have rebuilt a transmission here in the last couple of years can be counted on one hand (with fingers left over).

i also rebuilt A4LD, Jan '04, now it is broken again

Hello to everybody,

Crongrats to the responsibles of this site, it has unvaluable information. I just discovered the "A4LD rebuild Diary" a couple of days ago (that encouraged me to sign in and participate in this bouletins).

I rebuilt my 92 EXP tranny last year, also did by my self (what a nice feeling of victory....!!! ). It was on Jan'04, if i waited a few months i could follow glacier's diary, but had to do by myself. I grabbed all info I could from all places: internet, manuals, enciclopedya, etc. Took pics, just for rembering whow to solve the puzzle again. It was fine for 12 months, even after a couple of trips more than 1000 miles each.

Nothing upgraded to better performance, just wanted the thing to run as it was before (now i know i must improve it...!! ) changed soft parts and bushings. NOW IT IS BURNED...!!!!! just the Forward clutch package.

I am rebuilding again.... and i think it is the sleeve on the manual selector what i need to install (i think everytime it was on Parking, Forward was also activated, so it burned)..... is this the possible cause?????

I want to thank Glacier and Brain.... your info is really a treasure.

I am glad to join this group, hope to share as much info as i may get from you folks...... thanks.

A common reason for a burned forward clutch is the manual lever hole slop lets it engage in park.... I think that mod is important on older A4LD's... let me know if I can help you get that part. And congrats...and sorry .... we're here to help any way we can.

Glacier helped me big time with his A4LD diary when I repaired my tranny. Not too many guys I know (who are mechanics) that would have dug into it.

Thanks again Glacier
