The trans in my 91 explorer just started having shifting problems. It is shifting all over the place on its own while driving down the road. I'm thinking it's the modulator, but i just read an article about the 4x4 electric shift module. could this have anything to do with the problem that i am having. The fluid is new and full. It seems to drive fine except for the back and forth shifting. The tach is also jumping around between 2200 and 3500 at highway speeds. Any ideas you may have would be helpful. I have until friday to try to fix the problem. thanks.

Every time it shifts it does change gears. it just seems as if it doesn't know which gear it is suppose to be in. it still changes gears at high and low rpms. It does this from the time i leave a complete stop until i do stop again. and no it doesn't seem to be slipping either.

I took it out again this morning. This time i paid close attention to what it was doing, and it does seem to be hunting for gears. Any ideas to what it's doing and what's causing it.

Yes! It also has a new filter. Today i checked the modulator and it was dry as a bone. So i can at least take one item off the list. I just need help narrowing it down further. All ideas welcomed.

No i did'nt! Wanted too, but ran out of time that weekend. I changed the fluid and filter 2 months ago, then last week this issue popped up out of no where. My gut tells me it's something simple, but what? Although erratic! The trans is still shifting good. It's not hard shifting or clunking, anything like that. More like the computer is telling it to be in 2 gears at the same time and it can't, it's really bad in OD. does'nt want to stay in od even at highway speeds. my rpms in od are staying at 3300 at 55 mph, normally run 2000. Ideas welcomed. (even the parts stores here, have no clue)

Thanks again! I always try to get ahead of myself.
