I just bought this Superior Shift kit mainly because I wanted to try the new steel modulator valve/shuttle with the grooves. My truck won't shift automatically anymore. I replaced the old modulator because it was leaking and stopped holding vacuum. It was the original Ford modulator and wasn't adjustable, it has a NON restricted orifice too. The new modulator I bought from Autozone is adjustable and has a restricted orifice. I couldn't find a modulator just like the original. I think a may have to go to a Ford dealership for that. (What's the point of restricting the vacuum orifice anyway?)
When I installed the new modulator without adjusting it and the tranny wouldn't shift at all. Infact, my truck ran like **** but after I adjusted it down (3 turns counterclockwise) it shifts at 2000rpms from 1-2 very nicely but only for a mile or so and only when it's cold. After that I have to let off the gas when it reaches 2000rpms and it will shift from 1-2 just fine. Anyway, I'm going to adjust the modulator again and install this new steel valve/shuttle and see it makes any difference.

My question: Does anyone know what this small spring in this kit is for? I saw a post where a guy placed this spring into the transmission bore with the modulator valve/shuttle but I can't find any information on the Superior website or anywhere else saying what this spring is actually for. Superior says this kit includes a governor anti-stick spring and I'm thinking maybe that's what this is. There is no information in the instructions saying this must go inside the tranny bore. I don't want to put it in because if I do, I may not be able to pull it back out. I'm going to try it WITHOUT this spring, just the modulator, the pin and the new steel valve. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. A couple days ago I emailed Superior about the cone shaped spring and they said it goes on the end of their steel modulator valve/shuttle. The wide end of the spring points away from the valve and the small end snaps onto the circular protrusion of the valve.
