About engine oil

Last year I started using Mobil 1 5-20w in Florida weather. Anyway...seems like great oil. The oil change light still come on about 2500 to 3k miles..i check my oil level...on the low side so i refill a bit. Do I have to replace the oil? I drive mostly highway. My car got 135k miles.

It's a personal choice.

The only reason to change the oil is to get the dirt out. you can run synthetic oil for more than 100,000 miles with minimum wear but longer if you get the dirt out. It's a personal choice.

Unless your air filter is in really poor condition, there should be very little "dirt", aka silica accumulation in oil. This can be shown in an oil analysis.

Larger factors are viscosity breakdown of the oil, and accumulation of metals due to engine wear (too fine for filter to filter out).

Personally, I change my synthetic around 7000 miles.

Thx for replying. So does the oil change light come on because it really need to be changed or it is programmed that way?

It's programmed to come on after so many miles/time has elapsed.

Should be able to change the oil life start value in the cluster. Mine is at factory set 5,000 miles

I used amsoil 25,000 until my local parts store stopped stocking/selling it... now I use mobile one 15,000... what I do is right after winter change the oil and filter... then every 5,000 miles change filter and 1qt right up until the next spring... the oil in the spring still tastes great and off sets the price of a $60 oil change... been doing it like this since late 90's

i use royal purple and use a high end Bosch filter and do mine every 8,500K or so. my oil light came on at 7,500 miles. Royal Purples website says 10K miles but i rather do it a little sooner. on Another note i used to use Mobile 1 full Sync and i used to go through about 1 quart of oil every 5K miles when i changed it, at 8,500 miles on Royal purple it was maybe 1/4 or 1/5th of that. so its a way better oil in many ways. and at walmart its only a little more then mobile .

Thanks!..i go thru about 1 qt with my mobil 1 too...i thought someone was wrong..but i guess it's alright. i will take a look at royal purples.

no problem. yea between not loosing as much and going an extra 3-4K miles the cost evens out and its just a better oil. and i use the Bosch DistancePlus filter, get it all from walmart.
