I have about 190000km on my truck and i always used valvoline
oil. Just wanted to know if it is ok to change to a differant brand and possiblely to a semi-synthetic oil.

It will not hurt to switch to another brand. The only problems I have seen with switching brands is when someone does it constantly, but if you are planning to switch and stick with another brand (semi-syn is fine also) you will have no problems. Just remember to stick with a reputible name brand and use a quality filter.

Oh yeah..its all about the filter. I use the K&N ones.. but I think other people make filters that are of the same quality. I also put in one of those magnetic oil plugs... those things acually work. I got some pieces of metal about 1/4" thick on there! But if your gunna go semi... you could always bite the bullet and go full! :) I have been using Castrol full synthetic... havent had any problems so far. And we all know that my explorer is the coolest one around... so there.

yeah..i was kidding about that metal on the plug... hehe. but there was some black metaly stuff...

I've never seen one of the K&N filters????

where are they......how much.....Are they any better??????

Get ready for leaks if you switch to full synthetic oil at 190K miles. I switched at about 75K and almost immediately got a rear main seal leak. Not bad enough to drip onto the driveway but it keeps the underside of my 4.0 quite messy.

However, the additional protection of synthetics is worth it (at least to me).

Well at least the oil will keep the underside from rusting!:D

Buckshot,

No problem switching. If you are considering a semi-synthetic, stay with the dino stuff. There is usually only about 5% synthetic in the semi which is not enough to make a real difference in the oil's performance.

Something to remember about synthetics is they do not cause leaks. Because they flow more easily, they tend to leak better than the petroleum products. They also have better detergent properties that tend to help clean things up inside the engine. Hence, the propensity for leaks to appear after switching sometimes.

I changed to Amsoil 5W-30 and their filter on my 93 at 107,000 miles. I was a bit scared of the better oil "finding" ways to leak out. So far, no leaks and I love the oil and filter. I wouldn't go back to Mobil 1 or any dino oil again. Now has 120,000 miles, no oil used between changes and oil has stayed unbelievably clean, especially compared to the Mobil 1 5W-30 and filter I used to use in my Ranger 4.0L, and it was new. I plan on driving my 93 for a long time to come, so think the Amsoil is worth it. If I were leasing one or buying a new one every 50,000 miles, I'd use the cheap stuff I guess.

i tried the semi-synthetic and saw no real difference from
the dino oil.I switched to full synthetic and saw a big difference, I had noisey lifters and the synthetic stopped them from from chattering.imho the synthetic has made my engine run better and I had 96000 miles on my explorer when
I changed to synthetic, after 3000 miles no leaks.I went with mobile synthetic and mobile oil filter. I will change
the filter this weekend just to make sure there is not to much trash in it.
