about to trade my mustang for a 99 explorer... good plan?

30 seconds later update!

I just got a reply from the guy with the explorer.
I told him I was proly not going to trade and he is now offerign me some cash to sweeten the deal.
When I met up with him I could tell his wife realy liked my mustang (it is super clean) and she said she realy wanted a smaler vehichle than the explorer.

Would the explorer be back on for you if the price was now effectively 2500 bucks?

I can add the extra cash towards the family van that I need to buy within the next 3 months, that would be nice.

I would still pass that one up. Too many mile, plus rust. I would not do it.

Definitely not. They sound desperate to get rid of the Explorer since they are now offering up cash.

No, the Explorer. I wouldn't pay more than $1k for that high mileage rust trap. Walk away, keep your stang.

Man, I'm starting to think I've under advertised, in comparison to the vehicles I've seen my mustang is rediculously clean for it's age.
Everything I go see that's 98-02 is either rotten as a pear or beat to ****.

Explorer = best so far, but worth nothing like the KBB the fella put the link to, way too many small dings, rust spots and miles.

Montana = filthy inside inc oil stains rusty, & large damage to rear pas side corner (the one corner not shown in the craigslist photo's ofcourse)

Isuzu = looking tired and very rattly/loose.

Mercury villager, described as low miles and very tidy = 80K & seen more battles than downtown Beirut.

I will be researching bolt on hitches and hitch bike racks for my mustang I think.

Unless anyone here has an Explorer that is in better shape for 3K ?

You're just like me. I'm always in shock when I see what most people consider a "clean" ride.

Keep the stang unless you find an Explorer that you really want and will be happy with. Whenever I buy a used car, I never like to go "down the ladder" in terms of vehicle condition/yr/mileage. Your next used used car should supersede the one you currently have.

Good luck.

Well I have seen a 2 door explorer that was amazingly rust free, but ratttled & whined more than I could belive. 160K owner from new, couldn't remember if he'd had the timing done or the trans flushed... Passed on that.
Also a Ranger with more rust underneath than solid body left... Passed again.

Sold my stang this morning for 3500 cash so needed to sort out a vehicle today/tom, so I went to check out an Audi A6 wagon.
Worlds apart, quiet, smooth and fits my bike just as well as the explorer.
Been a Ford fan for many years, but it's time to go German.

97 Rodeo is not a bad vehicle. Last year of that version (91-97). Honda thought it was good enough to put their name on it and sell it as the Passport.

My old work had a '01 Rodeo from new (the next generation) and it was the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen. The transmission went out at 75,000 miles. Started burning a ton of oil before that. Tons of electrical problems switches, rear wiper ect. when it was just a few years old. Ridiculously low ground clearance for a 4wd vehicle. Very cheap interior, uncomfortable interior. ect., ect., ect.

Agreed, the Isuzu was very old skool.
I might as well have got a series 1 landrover!

My loyalty to the blue oval is over for now though.

100 mile trip home in my new wagon and it felt like 10 miles in the noisy heavy mustang.

Thanks for your input guys, I think you saved me from an error with the 99 explorer.
