ABS braking problem.

Thanks, my warning light came on last week and that is what convinced me that it must be a sensor problem. When it was on the brakes worked great, ie. no ABS, as soon as I turned the X off and later restarted the light was off and the problem was back.

Hey Teachertim,

It seems like you are the only one on this thread with the close to the same stuff as me. Same body style and both are 2wd. My question is: did you fix the slow speed stop ABS problem? Was it the sensors? Where are they on our 2wd 1st generation Xs?? How much were they?? Thanks for the help. I can't pull the ABS fuse and feel good about it. SO i have to fix the problem.

My slow speed ABS problem went away after jacking up the truck and finding out that the driver side wheel bearing was loose, Its seems the sensor couldnt get a reading all the time, Had to get a big ole socket from the NAPA SEMI TRUCK part store to tighten the 4wd wheel nut CORRECTLY (TOOK TWO WEEKS TO FIND IT)(YES the right tool makes it WAY easyer to tighten the nut) wish i got the socket 4 yrs ago =) Hope this helps

To the best of my limited knowledge the 91 and 92 explorers only had rear wheel ABS (at least my 92 only has rear wheel) which is why you pre93 guys can lock your front brakes. The 4 wheel ABS came out in 93 and to be quite honest it sucks, from the looks of this thread things haven't changed much over the years, if you live in a dry climate like I do then pull the fuse, those of you who live in areas where things get slick might want to consider fixing it. Just my $.02.

The 91 and 92 definately did NOT have front abs, and the rear wasn't good enough to count towards a credit on my insurance.

Take a look at AutoDiag

Check out AutoDiag at www.diagtek.com. It will pull the codes to show sensor faults and run self-test for the ABS system on '95 and newer Explorers.
